The Town

From the hilltop university, Ridgemont stretches out below: homes, aging storefronts, the old brick library, and a distant water tower. Forested slopes rise around the town, while the reservoir lies beyond the streets, tucked between the ridges.

It’s a place Dante knows by its shortcuts, worn roads, and familiar faces. That makes the first signs of something wrong harder to explain away.

The Water

Tony Marino’s job is keeping Ridgemont’s aging pumps and valves running. Out by the reservoir, river water passes through intake screens, clarifiers, and filters before the pipes carry it down toward town.

When Dante brings his father takeout, an ambulance is parked at the gate and yellow tape hangs beside the intake catwalk. Tony calls it an accident. On the metal grating, Dante sees something that doesn’t belong.

The University

At Ridgemont U, Dante moves between lectures, soccer practice, and friends who know when something’s bothering him.

Kai complains that the dorm water tastes rotten and that the headaches won’t stop. Siena challenges a glossy Ridgemont Forward recruitment table in the humanities building.

Small things, at first. Then the connections become harder to ignore.

The Core

Beyond the familiar ridge trail lies a crater where rock has fused like glass around torn metal. Among the wreckage rests a dark sphere no bigger than a softball. Blue-white lightning coils beneath a surface so smooth it seems to bend the light around it.

Dante feels drawn to this place long before he knows what’s waiting. In the crater, he hears his name in a voice that doesn’t come from any of his friends.
